We’ve spent a lot of time on this blog talking about what to do when CPS workers show up on your doorstep, or how to handle it when someone accuses you of child abuse. But one of the subjects we haven’t covered in as much detail, is why CPS would want to take your kids away. So for those of you who don’t believe it could happen to you, or don’t think you’re in any way at risk of losing your family to the state, this one’s for you.

The children are at risk of further harm.

If a CPS worker shows up at your house and ends up wanting to leave an hour later with your kids, it’s because they believe your children are already in danger, and leaving them with you puts them at risk of further harm. Now hold your horses! We didn’t say that CPS worker was correct! (They’re often wrong!) We just said they have to believe that your children are at risk of being harmed. So if there is anything that could lead them to believe that leaving your kids in your home with you puts them at risk of some kind of abuse or neglect, they’re likely to try to take your children away.

But what reasons could they possibly have to take them?

A CPS worker could come up with a whole host of reasons to take a child. Here are a few of the more common ones:

• There is domestic violence happening in your home, which puts your child at risk of physical abuse
• You or another adult in the home is using drugs, which puts the child at risk of exposure to toxins (like meth), or neglect (because high people can’t properly care for children)
• Allegations of sexual assault against a child have been made against you or another adult in your home.
• Your child has injuries that are potentially consistent with physical abuse
• Your child shows signs of being severely neglected (underfed, or not properly clothed)
• You are not complying with a doctor’s orders for a treatment considered to be in your child’s best interest
• Your child has missed too many days of school and you aren’t willing to work with the school district to increase their attendance.

These certainly aren’t all the reasons why CPS could decide that your children aren’t safe in your care, but they’re some of the more common ones. However, once a CPS worker has decided that your child is at risk of abuse or neglect in your home, you have an uphill battle to get your child back as soon as possible.
