Involving Your Kids in Criminal Activity Might Cost You Your Parenting Rights in Michigan!

The idea of involving your children in criminal activity might sound strange to many parents, but believe it or not it happens. And some parents don’t even realize that what they’re doing is wrong, and could cost them their families! Teaching a child to slip a pair of earrings you can’t afford into their underwear in a department store, or allowing them to sneak a handful of candy bars into their pocket while grocery shopping might sound harmless in the big picture, but it’s not. Parents who teach their children that stealing, breaking and entering, or drug dealing isn’t a big deal could end up dealing with a lot more than criminal charges. They may end up losing their children to CPS!

A Michigan mom is facing a CPS investigation for involving her kid in criminal activity!

A current case here in Michigan highlights this issue perfectly. A mom from Adrian is facing a CPS investigation right now because she involved her teenage daughter in criminal activity. According to the Michigan State Police, officials from the Michigan Department of Corrections uncovered a plot on Saturday, September 19th, to smuggle drugs into Lakeland Correctional Facility in Coldwater. All three people involved – the 33-year-old mom, her 15-year-old daughter, and a 20-year-old Adrian man, are all facing criminal charges. But MSP investigators called CPS as well, and now the mom is also facing a CPS investigation that might cost her, her daughter in the end.

The teen has been removed by CPS and placed in foster care with family.

The two adults involved have been arrested and taken to jail, while the teen was turned over into the custody of a family member. Although CPS often tries to place children with relatives when they remove them from their parent’s custody, it isn’t always possible. Sometimes there are no relatives available to take a child at such short notice. Sometimes they don’t live close enough, or have criminal records of their own that make it impossible for CPS to leave a child with them. Sometimes they simply don’t want the added responsibility of another child, even if that kid is a relative. And when that happens, a kid ends up with strangers. And once they’re out of your home and in foster care, it can be really hard to get them back.

Losing your kids to CPS is awful, but it can be avoided!

Obviously, keeping CPS out of your house and away from your family starts with making good parenting choices. But as you probably already know, sometimes that isn’t enough.
