A deputy from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department noticed a vehicle driving with a broken headlight near Three Rivers. ‘Fix it’ tickets are pretty routine, and the officer tried to pull the car over to let the driver know they had a headlight out. But the driver had other ideas. Instead of stopping, the car took off, weaving in and out of traffic and sometimes exceeding 100 miles per hour as it flew through Fabius Township and Three Rivers.
Cops had to force the car off the road…
The deputy gave chase and called for backup. As it became clear that the driver, who wasn’t alone in the vehicle, had no plans to stop, other law enforcement agencies came on board to assist. The Three Rivers Police Department, the Constantine Police Department, the White Pigeon Police Department, and the Michigan State Police all ended up involved in the chase. In the end, officers were able to use ‘stop sticks’ to stop the car, which crashed into a ditch shortly afterward.
The people in the car fled on foot through the swamp…
When officers located the car, it had been abandoned in Constantine Township. A K-9 unit was called in, and dogs tracked the scent of the fleeing driver through a densely wooded area, before finally losing the trail in a swamp. A little while later, the police got a call from a resident in the area who said that a family of four had showed up on their doorstep, soaking wet and asking for help. When police arrived at the home, they discovered the family needing help was none other than the driver
The couple in the car ended up facing charges…
The two adults in the car were a 24-year-old male and 25-year-old female, both from Edwardsburg. They were both arrested and taken to the St. Joseph County Jail. They have both been charged with multiple charges, including Fleeing and Eluding, Resisting and Obstruction, Child Abuse, and numerous driving violations. If you’re curious about the child abuse charges, it’s because officers discovered that the couple had two children in the car with them during the high-speed chase. CPS was called to the scene of the arrest, and the children were placed into foster care.
